How to Tell People About Your New Podcast

As a podcast host, I get lots of questions about my show. Over the last year, a set of frequently asked questions has emerged. To help new podcast hosts, I’ll share the questions and my tips for answering them.

1. You have a podcast! What’s it about? This is the moment to share a pitch that will attract the people who would love your podcast and bore the rest. Answering “It’s about baseball” will get you nowhere. Try something specific, “It’s a podcast for hardcore Cubs fans. Before every game we discuss recent trades, injuries, pitchers, and how the Cubs match up against the opposition.”

2. How often do you record? No one actually cares how often you go to the studio to record. They want to know how often your show comes out and how much work you put in. For our fictional Cubs example, don’t say, “I record once per week during the season and not at all during the offseason.” Instead say, “New episodes drop at 7AM Eastern every game day so you can get up to speed during your commute or at the gym.” Now they see how it would or would not fit into their schedule.

3. What’s your podcast called? Give them something easy to remember and easy to search. I’ve got the easy to remember part down, because my podcast is named after me, Brendan Carr Podcast. But, if I’m just getting to know someone they may have trouble with different spellings, such as Brendon or Branden. Our baseball show would do well with Cubs Baseball Now.

4. Is it on [Insert favorite podcast platform]? Be sure that your podcast is everywhere. I use four services to cover 14 platforms. YouTube for my video episodes, LibSyn for Apple Podcasts, SoundCloud for itself, and Anchor.fm for everything else. Because Anchor is always expanding, this is a great place to maximize your distribution.

5. Can you send me the link? Best to minimize friction and look it up with someone on their smartphone. If that’s not possible, have a link to a central hub ready to send. Anchor is a great link to send because the platform links out to other platforms including Spotify, Stitcher, Castbox, and more. Personally, I share my YouTube link because I’m proud of the videos we create and the YouTube channel page also has links to audio-only platforms, such as Apple Podcasts.

What do you tell people about your favorite podcast? I’d love to talk about it in the comments.
